Embracing All The Changes and Challenges
When I first started teaching step aerobics back in the 90s, I was in my 30s, full of energy, teaching multiple classes a day, jumping all over the place, and feeling pretty invincible.
That's also when I discovered a little surprise called “bladder leakage”.
At first, it was just an occasional "Oops, I should have stopped by the restroom before class."
I didn't think much of it.
Fast forward 30 years...
Let's just say Depends, Poise, and every other brand on the market now know me on a first-name basis.
The funny thing about getting older is that nobody really talks about these changes until you're living them. Suddenly conversations with friends sound like:
"What knee brace do you use?"
"Who's your hearing aid guy?"
"What reading glasses do you like?"
"Have you found a good no-show panty liner for exercise?"
“What’s your favorite back brace?”
And honestly? That's okay.
At Sweat Therapy Fitness, we cater to the 55+ community, and one thing I've learned is that aging comes with a few extra accessories. Sometimes it's reading glasses. Sometimes it's a knee replacement. Sometimes it's hearing aids. And sometimes it's a bladder pad tucked discreetly where nobody can see it.
Well... almost nobody.
Our English Cocker Spaniel, Sully, knows exactly where I keep them at the studio. One day he grabbed one and proudly paraded through Sweat Therapy like he'd just won Best in Show at Westminster. Tail wagging, head held high, showing off his prize to anyone willing to look.
Clients were laughing. I was laughing. And that was the moment I was truly humbled.
It was also the moment I decided it was time to stop worrying about these little changes and simply embrace them.
The truth is, if you've lived long enough, you've earned a few stories, a few aches and pains, a pair of readers, and maybe even a backup plan for when you sneeze too hard.
But none of those things mean you stop moving.
You can still exercise.
You can still laugh.
You can still dance.
You can still box.
You can still live a full, active life.
At Sweat Therapy, we embrace all of it—the changes, the challenges, the laughter, and the victories. Nobody has to be embarrassed here. Chances are the person next to you has a similar story.
Growing older isn't always glamorous, but it sure beats the alternative.
And if you happen to hear someone say, "Hold on, I need one more bathroom break," just know they're among friends.
We're all in this together.
